In a bid to cut disposable plastic waste, the University of Minnesota’s Office of Sustainability partnered with Fill it Forward in August 2016 to launch the Choose ReUse and Win rewards program for their students and staff. Incoming students received a Fill it Forward tag during UMN’s Welcome Week to attach to their reusable bottle. Once students downloaded the Fill it Forward app for free, they began scanning their Fill it Forward tag each time they refilled.
Each time a student uses the Fill it Forward app, they collect 10 points, up to 5 times a day. For every 1,000 points a student earns, they can redeem their points for an entry into a monthly draw. Additionally, the Office of Sustainability team created a bonus point sign that allows students to earn 500 bonus points on their first scan.
In September 2018, University of Minnesota took the Choose ReUse and Win program a step further by partnering with the Department of Parking and Transportation Services as well as other departments on campus to provide additional prizes to students. On top of the point-based reward, students now have the chance to win random monthly draw prizes. In return for the prizing each department is featured within the app to promote their services to students on campus.
Overall, the program has helped encourage students, faculty, and staff to cut plastic waste on University of Minnesota’s campus. The program has already helped divert 108,841 single-use bottles from going to landfill!
